h1>Vendor class identifiers in DHCP requests

What are vendor class identifiers?

Vendor class identifiers (VCIs) are codes that identify the type of device that is making a DHCP request. This information is used by the DHCP server to configure the network settings for the device.

MSFT 5.0 and dhcpcd-5.5.6

MSFT 5.0 is the VCI for Windows computers, while dhcpcd-5.5.6 is the VCI for Android devices. These VCIs are used to identify the type of device that is making the DHCP request and to configure the network settings accordingly.

Option 60

In addition to the VCI, the DHCP request may also include an Option 60 field. This field contains information about the device's operating system and version. For Windows devices, the Option 60 field will contain the value “MSFT 5.0”. For Android devices, the Option 60 field will contain the value “dhcpcd-5.5.6”.

Client Vendor Name

The traditional Client Vendor Name for Windows devices is “MSFT 5.0”. However, some newer Windows devices may use the Client Vendor Name “android-dhcp-13”. This value corresponds to Android devices that are running Android 13.

Conclusion

VCIs are used by DHCP servers to identify the type of device that is making a DHCP request and to configure the network settings accordingly. The Option 60 field and the Client Vendor Name can provide additional information about the device's operating system and version.
