Creating Animated GIFs with GIMP

Introduction

Animated GIFs have become a ubiquitous form of online communication, from simple memes to complex animations. While there are many tools available for creating GIFs, GIMP is a powerful and free option that makes it easy to create high-quality animated images.

Step 1: Create a New Image

To create a new GIF in GIMP, start by creating a new image with the desired dimensions. For this tutorial, we'll create a simple web banner with dimensions of 468×60 px. Use white as the background color.

Step 2: Add Content

Next, add the content you want to animate to your image. For this example, we'll add some text and a simple graphic. Use the Text Tool to add the text and the Rectangle Tool to create the graphic.

Step 3: Create Frames

Once you have added your content, you're ready to start creating frames for your animation. In the Animation Timeline, click the “New” button to create a new frame. You can add as many frames as you need to create your animation.

Step 4: Preview and Save

Once you have created all of your frames, you can preview the animation by clicking the “Play” button. If you're happy with the animation, click the “Save” button to export it as a GIF file.
