How Animals Survive Winter
Staying Warm in the Cold
When the cold weather hits, animals have to find ways to stay warm. Some animals, like squirrels and mice, may huddle close together to share body heat. Others, like certain spiders and insects, may stay active if they live in frost-free areas. According to the National Park Service, little brown bats hibernate in caves or mines during the winter months.
Adapting to Winter
Some animals, like rabbits, deer, and mice, stay where they live and adapt to the changing seasons. They may grow thicker fur or change their diet to include more high-energy foods. Other animals, like birds and butterflies, migrate to warmer climates during the winter months.
