Ship Design Factors from the Ship Designers

22 Ship Accelerations at the Center of Gravity

221 Surge Acceleration

The longitudinal acceleration due to surge is given by the following:

“` a_s = -\omega^2 \xi_s “`

where:

* `a_s` is the surge acceleration (m/s^2) * `ω` is the wave frequency (rad/s) * `ξ_s` is the surge displacement amplitude (m)

For a given sea condition, ship length makes a big difference in behavior. Small ships suffer from larger motions.
