Surveillance Video Shows Final Moments Before Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Death
New Footage Reveals Details of Toddler's Fall
CBS News has obtained surveillance video that shows the final moments before a 18-month-old girl fell to her death from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. The video appears to show the girl, Chloe Wiegand, falling from her grandfather's arms as the ship was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 7.
Tragic Accident
Chloe's grandfather, Salvatore Anello, has said that he thought a window on the 11th floor of the Freedom of the Seas was closed when he lifted Chloe up to it so she could bang on the glass. However, the window was actually open, and Chloe fell through it, landing on the concrete deck below.
The new video shows Chloe and her grandfather standing near the window just before the fall. Anello appears to be holding Chloe in his arms and talking to her. A few seconds later, the video shows Anello lifting Chloe up to the window and then stepping back. Chloe then appears to fall out of the window, and Anello is seen reaching out to try to catch her.
The video is the latest piece of evidence to emerge in the investigation into Chloe's death. Royal Caribbean has said that it is cooperating with the investigation, and the FBI and the U.S. Coast Guard are also involved.
