Hurricane Relief Focuses on Animal Safety
Lessons Learned from Katrina
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, federal agencies are prioritizing the safety of animals stranded in Texas. The lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, where thousands of animals were left behind, are being applied to ensure a more humane response this time around.
Evacuation and Shelter
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are working together to evacuate animals from flooded areas and provide temporary shelters for those that cannot be evacuated. Animal welfare organizations are also assisting with the rescue and care of stranded animals.
