Scabies Outbreak Hits Four NSW Hospitals

38 Patients Now Infected

An outbreak of a highly infectious super strain of scabies has hit four major hospitals in New South Wales, with 38 patients now infected. The outbreak is affecting hospitals in the Illawarra region, with health authorities working to control the spread of the infection.

Residents Urged to Be on Alert

NSW Health is urging residents to be on alert for symptoms of scabies, which include intense itching, particularly at night, and a rash with small, red, raised spots. The infection is spread through close skin-to-skin contact, or by sharing contaminated clothing or bedding.

Health authorities are managing the outbreak, with additional patients and staff being diagnosed with scabies. A number of wards across the affected hospitals are being impacted, and health officials are working to contain the spread of the infection.

Anyone who has been in contact with someone who has scabies, or who has symptoms of the infection, is urged to see a doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent the spread of the infection.
