Deadly Virus Found in Ouachita County Horse
EEE has been confirmed in Ouachita County
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – A horse in Ouachita County has tested positive for Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE), a deadly virus that can also affect humans. This is the first confirmed case of EEE in Arkansas this year.
EEE is a rare but serious disease that is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of EEE in humans can include fever, headache, chills, and muscle aches. In severe cases, EEE can lead to encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and death.
The Arkansas Department of Health is urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, using insect repellent, and emptying standing water around their homes.
There is no specific treatment for EEE, but supportive care can help to improve the chances of survival. Anyone who experiences symptoms of EEE should seek medical attention immediately.
