Understanding Psychological Stress
What is Psychological Stress?
Definition and Causes
Psychological stress is a normal human reaction to everyday pressures and challenges. It occurs when our physical or mental resources are perceived as inadequate to handle demands or threats. Stressful situations can arise from various sources, such as work, family, financial concerns, or traumatic events.
The Stress Response
Physiological and Psychological Changes
When we experience stress, our bodies and minds undergo a series of physiological and psychological changes known as the stress response. This response is designed to prepare us for either “fight or flight,” mobilizing energy and releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
