In the 1960s, researchers learned that non-coding DNA can serve vital functions such as regulating the expression of genes. However, much of the non-coding DNA in the human genome remained a mystery, and was often referred to as “junk DNA.” Now, a new study has found that even this so-called junk DNA may have an important role to play in our health.
