WHO Declares Mpox a Public Health Emergency
Global Health Concern
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, a public health emergency of international concern. This decision was made after a meeting of the WHO Emergency Committee on Mpox on July 23, 2023.
Rising Outbreak
The WHO has been monitoring a rapidly escalating global outbreak of mpox since May 2022. As of July 23, over 16,000 cases have been reported from more than 75 countries. The majority of cases have occurred in men who have sex with men.
