PAHO Issues Epidemiological Alert for Oropouche Virus
Rare Disease Spreads in Latin America
Washington, D.C. (July 24, 2024)
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiological alert for Oropouche virus, a rare disease spread by midges. The virus has been reported in several countries in Latin America, including areas where it has not been historically recorded.
Oropouche virus is typically transmitted to humans through the bite of infected midges, which are found in forested areas. Symptoms of the virus can include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and joint pain.
In severe cases, Oropouche virus can lead to encephalitis, meningitis, and even death. However, most people who become infected with the virus will only experience mild symptoms.
PAHO is urging people to take steps to protect themselves from Oropouche virus, including avoiding areas where midges are known to be present, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and using insect repellent.
The organization is also working with health authorities in affected countries to monitor the spread of the virus and provide treatment for those who become infected.
