Travel-Related Dengue Case Confirmed on Oahu

DOH Urges Residents and Visitors to Take Precautions

Honolulu, Hawaii — July 13, 2024

The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed a travel-related case of dengue virus on Oahu. This is the first travel-related case of dengue reported in Hawaii this year.

The individual who acquired the virus is a resident of Oahu who recently traveled to a dengue-endemic region. The individual is currently experiencing mild symptoms and is recovering at home.

DOH is urging residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent the spread of dengue fever. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and a rash. In severe cases, dengue fever can be fatal.

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but supportive care can help relieve symptoms. There is also no vaccine available for dengue fever, but a vaccine is under development.

To prevent the spread of dengue fever, residents and visitors should:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Stay in air-conditioned or screened-in areas.
  • Empty standing water from containers around your home.
  • Use mosquito nets when sleeping.
