Thurston County Reports First Rabies Bat of the Year

Public Health Officials Urge Caution

Contact Medical Provider or Public Health for Exposure Concerns

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) has confirmed the first rabies-positive bat in Thurston County this year. This is the 13th case of rabies in the county this year.

PHSS urges residents to be cautious and to contact their medical provider and call Public Health and Social Services during business hours at 360-867-2667 or Washington Poison Control at 800-222. if they think they have been exposed to a bat.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans and animals through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Symptoms of rabies in humans can include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle weakness, and confusion. If you think you have been exposed to a bat, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.
