Methanol's Moment Has Arrived
Shipping Industry Embraces Cleaner Fuel
Alternative Fuel Gains Popularity
The shipping industry is embracing methanol as a cleaner alternative fuel, driven by growing environmental concerns and the need for more sustainable practices. Methanol, a liquid fuel derived from natural gas or coal, has emerged as a promising option due to its low carbon emissions and the availability of established infrastructure.
One of the key players in this transition is Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), one of the largest operators of methanol carriers worldwide. MOL has recently taken delivery of the MILLENNIUM EXPLORER, a double-hulled methanol carrier with twice the capacity of any other vessel of its kind. This latest addition to MOL's fleet demonstrates the company's commitment to methanol as a viable alternative fuel.
Technology group Wärtsilä is also contributing to the adoption of methanol in the shipping industry. Wärtsilä has secured contracts to supply methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for five new container vessels, highlighting the growing demand for this eco-friendly fuel. In 2023 alone, methanol emerged as the most popular choice for alternative fuels, with 138 ships ordered excluding those powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
