Cal Quantrill pitches effectively for five innings
DENVER — Brendan Rodgers and Charlie Blackmon homered, Cal Quantrill pitched effectively for five innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Rodgers hit a 400-foot solo homer to left-center field off Padres starter Nick Martinez in the first inning. Blackmon made it 3-0 with a two-run shot to right-center in the second.
Quantrill (5-6) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five. He walked two and hit a batter.
The Padres got on the board in the third inning on an RBI single by Ha-seong Kim. They added another run in the fifth on a groundout by Manny Machado.
The Rockies got some insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Yonathan Daza and an RBI single by Rodgers.
Daniel Bard pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 29th save.
The Rockies have won three straight games and are now 57-65 on the season. The Padres have lost three of their last four and are 72-50.
