Early Life and Education
James David JD Vance was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. He is the son of Beverly Vance and James Bowman. Vance grew up in Middletown and attended Middletown High School.
After graduating high school, Vance attended Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and philosophy in 2008. He then attended Yale Law School, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 2013.
Military Service
After graduating from law school, Vance joined the United States Marine Corps. He served as a captain and deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2008.
Career
After leaving the Marine Corps, Vance worked as a venture capitalist and investor. In 2016, he published a best-selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which detailed his experiences growing up in Appalachia.
In 2018, Vance ran for Congress in Ohio's 12th congressional district. He lost the Republican primary to incumbent Troy Balderson.
Political Career
In 2022, Vance ran for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. He won the Republican primary and defeated Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in the general election.
Vance is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Personal Life
Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri. They have three children.
Vance is a Christian and attends St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
