Angels acquire Mickey Moniak from Red Sox for cash considerations
The Los Angeles Angels have acquired outfielder Mickey Moniak from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations, the team announced Tuesday.
Moniak, 24, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
He was traded to the Red Sox in 2022 as part of the deal that sent Matt Strahm to Philadelphia.
In 148 career games, Moniak has a .227 batting average with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs.
He is expected to compete for a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster.
Moniak's acquisition gives the Angels another young outfielder to add to their depth chart.
The Angels have a number of outfielders who are expected to compete for playing time in 2023, including Mike Trout, Taylor Ward, and Jo Adell.
Moniak will likely be given a chance to compete for a starting role in spring training.
The Angels are hoping that Moniak can reach his potential in Los Angeles.
Moniak was once considered one of the top prospects in baseball, but he has struggled to live up to expectations at the major league level.
The Angels are hoping that a change of scenery will help Moniak reach his potential.
