Murray to face Machac in US Open first round

British former world number one handed tricky assignment

Henman: Murray could face early exit

Former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been handed a difficult assignment in the first round of the US Open as he prepares to face Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.

Murray, now ranked 51 in the world, has been struggling for form this season and has not won a title since 2019.

Machac, who is ranked 108th, is a rising star on the ATP Tour and has already won two Challenger titles this season.

Former British number one Tim Henman believes that Murray could face an early exit from the tournament.

“Andy has not been playing well this season and he is up against a very talented player in Machac,” Henman said.

“It is going to be a tough match for Andy, and I would not be surprised if he loses in the first round.”

Murray has a good record in the US Open, reaching the final in 2008 and 2012.

However, he has not been past the third round since 2016.

The US Open begins on Monday, August 29.
