Rizzo signs with the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have signed first baseman Anthony Rizzo to a two-year, $40 million contract, the team announced Thursday.
Rizzo, 33, is a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner. He has a career batting average of .272 with 282 home runs and 942 RBIs.
Rizzo was traded to the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs in July 2021. He helped the Yankees reach the American League Wild Card Game, where they lost to the Boston Red Sox.
Rizzo is expected to be the Yankees' everyday first baseman in 2023. He will replace Luke Voit, who was traded to the San Diego Padres in November.
The signing of Rizzo is a significant addition to the Yankees' lineup. He is a proven hitter and fielder who can provide leadership in the clubhouse.
Rizzo is the latest in a series of free-agent signings by the Yankees this offseason. They have also signed outfielder Andrew Benintendi, pitcher Jameson Taillon, and infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The Yankees are hoping that the addition of Rizzo will help them win their first World Series since 2009.
