Atlanta United advances following penalty shootout

Atlanta United FC defeated CF Montreal 4-3 on penalty kicks Wednesday night at Stade Saputo to reach the MLS playoffs.

Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved Djordje Mihailovic's penalty kick in the shootout, and Thiago Almada converted the winning penalty kick to send Atlanta United to the playoffs for the third time in the club's five seasons.

Atlanta United and Montreal played to a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Atlanta United converted all four of its penalty kicks, while Montreal missed one, giving Atlanta United the victory.

Josef Martinez, Luiz Araujo, Thiago Almada, and Jake Mulraney scored penalty kicks for Atlanta United.

Mihailovic missed Montreal's third penalty kick, giving Atlanta United the advantage in the shootout.

Atlanta United advances to playoffs

With the win, Atlanta United advances to the MLS playoffs, where they will face the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The match will be played on Sunday, October 16th at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta United is looking to reach the MLS Cup for the second time in club history.
