Mayank Agarwal, R Ashwin, and Shivam Dube likely to miss South Africa T20Is; Axar Patel named as their replacement
India’s preparations for the upcoming tour to South Africa have hit a roadblock as three key players Mayank Agarwal, R Ashwin and Shivam Dube are set to miss the T20I series due to injuries.
Mayank Agarwal, who was recently handed his T20I debut in the series against Bangladesh, has been ruled out of the South Africa tour due to a left shoulder injury. The opening batter sustained the injury during the third T20I against Bangladesh and has been advised rest by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
All-rounder R Ashwin, who was part of India’s squad for the Bangladesh T20Is, has been ruled out of the tour due to a side strain. The off-spinner sustained the injury during the first T20I against Bangladesh and missed the remaining two matches of the series.
Shivam Dube, who was recalled to the Indian team for the Bangladesh T20Is, has also been ruled out of the South Africa tour due to a left quadriceps injury. The all-rounder sustained the injury during a training session and has been advised rest by the BCCI.
Axar Patel was added to the India squad
The BCCI has named Axar Patel as a replacement for Mayank Agarwal in the Indian squad for the South Africa T20Is. The all-rounder was originally named in the T20I squad for the Bangladesh tour but missed out due to an injury.
Patel made his T20I debut for India in 2015 and has since played 20 matches for the national team. He has scored 126 runs and taken 21 wickets in T20Is.
Stats
- Mayank Agarwal has scored 22 runs in 2 T20Is for India.
- R Ashwin has taken 7 wickets in 3 T20Is for India.
- Shivam Dube has scored 54 runs and taken 3 wickets in 13 T20Is for India.
- Axar Patel has scored 126 runs and taken 21 wickets in 20 T20Is for India.
What does it mean for India?
The absence of Agarwal, Ashwin, and Dube is a blow to India’s preparations for the South Africa tour. Agarwal is a key member of the team’s top order, while Ashwin and Dube are two of India’s most experienced all-rounders.
Patel is a like-for-like replacement for Agarwal, but India will miss the experience of Ashwin and Dube in the South Africa T20Is.
