Bremen Battle Back to Draw Leverkusen Late
Bremen Showed Great Resilience to Earn a Point
SV Werder Bremen fought back from a goal down to earn a deserved 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the Wohninvest WESERSTADION on Saturday afternoon. The Green-Whites were second best for much of the first half and fell behind to Moussa Diaby's 25th-minute opener, but they improved significantly after the break and levelled through substitute Eren Dinkci in the 79th minute.
Diaby Gives Leverkusen the Lead
Leverkusen started the game brightly and took the lead midway through the first half. Diaby latched onto a long pass from Jeremie Frimpong and raced clear of the Bremen defence before calmly slotting the ball past Jiri Pavlenka.
Bremen Improve After the Break
Bremen were much improved after the break and created a number of good chances to equalise. Leonardo Bittencourt saw a shot saved by Lukas Hradecky, while Anthony Jung headed wide from a corner. The Green-Whites finally got their reward in the 79th minute when Dinkci headed home from close range after a cross from Kevin Mohwald.
Bremen Deserved a Point
Bremen deserved a point for their second-half performance and could have even won the game in the closing stages. Bittencourt had a great chance to win it in the 88th minute, but he fired wide from inside the area.
What it Means
The draw leaves Bremen in 11th place in the Bundesliga table, while Leverkusen remain in 9th. Bremen will be back in action next weekend when they travel to face Borussia Monchengladbach, while Leverkusen will host Eintracht Frankfurt.
