The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are urging consumers to throw out any uncooked Jasmine rice in their pantries. The warning comes after an investigation linked the rice to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella.
The outbreak has affected more than 20 people in 12 states. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramps.
Affected Products
The following brands of Jasmine rice have been recalled:
- Aroy-D
- Carolina
- Golden Swan
- Jasmine
- Kokuho Rose
- Lotus Foods
- Riceselect
- Saigon
- Sushi
- Thien Swan
If you have any of these brands of Jasmine rice in your pantry, throw it out immediately. Do not eat it.
How to Avoid Salmonella
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It is typically found in raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
To avoid Salmonella infection, follow these tips:
- Cook meat, poultry, eggs, and fish to the proper temperature.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food.
- Wash fruits and vegetables before eating them.
- Do not eat raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, or fish.
- Store food properly in the refrigerator or freezer.
