Here’s how early ballot returns in Sonoma and Napa counties compare to 2020
Early returns show 19,000 more ballots cast by mail in Sonoma County than during the same period in 2020
As of Friday, Oct. 21, more than 91,000 Sonoma County voters had returned their ballots by mail, according to Registrar of Voters Deva Proto. During the same period in 2020, around 72,000 ballots had been returned.
In Napa County, Registrar of Voters John Tuteur said as of Oct. 24, almost 39,000 voters had returned their ballots. In 2020, about 32,000 ballots had been returned during the same timeframe.
Both Sonoma and Napa counties follow the trend of early voting by mail, which has become increasingly popular in California in recent years. In 2020, a record 86% of California voters cast their ballots by mail.
There are several reasons for the increase in mail-in voting. One reason is that it is more convenient for voters. They can vote from the comfort of their own homes and do not have to worry about finding a polling place on Election Day.
Another reason for the increase in mail-in voting is that it is more secure. Mail-in ballots are subject to several security measures, including signature verification and a paper trail.
Despite the increase in mail-in voting, there are still concerns about voter fraud. However, there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in California.
In fact, a study by the Brennan Center for Justice found that voter fraud is extremely rare. The study found that out of over 250 million ballots cast in the 2020 election, there were only 143 cases of suspected voter fraud. This represents a rate of 0.00005%.
Overall, mail-in voting is a safe and secure way to vote. It is also convenient and accessible for voters
