Russia-Ukraine: UN Says ‘Unprecedented’ 40% Of Ukraine Is Contaminated By Landmines
As war rages on in Ukraine, the United Nations (UN) has issued a stark warning about the devastating consequences of landmines left behind by both sides.
According to the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), approximately 40% of Ukraine is now contaminated by landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXOs), making it one of the most mine-affected countries in the world.
The contamination poses a significant threat to civilians, aid workers, and the country's reconstruction efforts.
The conflict has resulted in the widespread use of landmines and UXOs, which have caused numerous casualties among civilians. In 2022 alone, there were over 6,000 casualties from landmines and UXOs in Ukraine, including both fatalities and injuries.
The UNMAS has been working to clear mines and UXOs from affected areas, but the scale of the contamination is immense. The agency estimates that it will take decades and billions of dollars to clear all the mines and UXOs from Ukraine.
The contamination is also having a significant impact on the country's reconstruction efforts. Many areas that have been liberated from Russian control are still too dangerous to enter due to the presence of landmines and UXOs.
The UNMAS is calling for international assistance to help clear the landmines and UXOs from Ukraine and provide support to the victims of these deadly weapons.
