Michigan Braces for Severe Weather
Winter storm warnings issued for much of the state
A major winter storm is expected to hit Michigan this weekend, bringing with it heavy snow, strong winds, and possible power outages. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for much of the state, including the cities of Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Lansing.
The storm is expected to begin late Friday night and continue through Saturday. Snowfall totals could reach up to 12 inches in some areas. Winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour, causing blowing and drifting snow. The combination of snow and wind could make travel dangerous, and residents are advised to stay off the roads if possible.
Power outages possible
The storm could also cause power outages. DTE Energy, the state's largest utility, is urging customers to prepare for possible outages. The company has extra crews on standby to respond to outages, but customers may still experience delays in service.
If you lose power, DTE Energy recommends the following:
- Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage when power is restored.
- Keep a battery-powered radio on hand for updates.
- If you have a generator, follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
