Red Cross: Around 25 homes impacted by flooding in Lemmon Valley

Washoe County team responds to assist several residents

During a press conference, the Red Cross and Washoe County officials alerted residents of Lemmon Valley that around 25 homes were impacted by flooding after heavy rainfall led to the overflow of the Swan Lake levee Tuesday night. The Red Cross, along with the county and city of Reno, Washoe County School District, and the Nevada National Guard have been assisting residents with temporary shelter, food and other needs.

Evacuations lifted Wednesday morning

Most of the water had receded as of Wednesday morning after the levee was reinforced and the rain subsided, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. However, some residents were still being asked to avoid the area due to downed power lines and other hazards. The school district announced that all schools in the Lemmon Valley area would be closed Wednesday due to the flooding.

Donations needed for ongoing support

Volunteers from the Red Cross will continue to work with residents in the coming days and weeks to provide support and assistance. Those interested in helping with the relief effort can make a donation to the Red Cross at redcross.org.

Residents urged to be prepared for future flooding

The Red Cross also urged residents to be prepared for future flooding by having an emergency plan, assembling an emergency kit and staying informed about weather forecasts. More information on flood preparedness is available at redcross.org/prepare.
