Indiana Fever, WNBA, Stephanie White, Head coach, Connecticut Sun
Former UConn standout Stephanie White named head coach of Indiana Fever
White, a three-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion with the Huskies, returns to the WNBA after a successful stint as an assistant coach with the Connecticut Sun.
She replaces Marianne Stanley, who was fired after the Fever finished 5-29 last season.
White becomes the 12th head coach in Fever history and the first Black woman to lead the franchise. She is also one of just five Black women currently serving as head coaches in the WNBA.
White was a star player at UConn from 1999 to 2003. She helped the Huskies win two national championships (2000 and 2003) and was named a three-time All-American. She was also the Big East Player of the Year in 2003.
After her playing career, White worked as an assistant coach at UConn from 2008 to 2013. She then joined the Sun as an assistant coach in 2014. She helped the Sun reach the WNBA Finals in 2019.
White is known for her defensive acumen and her ability to develop young players. She is also a strong leader and communicator.
The Fever are hoping that White can turn around their fortunes. The team has not made the playoffs since 2016 and has not won a playoff series since 2015.
White is excited about the challenge of coaching the Fever. She believes that the team has a lot of potential and she is confident that she can help them reach their goals.
“I am honored and excited to be the head coach of the Indiana Fever,” White said. “I believe in this team and I am confident that we can achieve great things together.”
