Pelicans’ Karlo Matković: Back With NBA Club
Matković Rejoins Pelicans After Stint Overseas
The New Orleans Pelicans have announced the return of center Karlo Matković for the upcoming season. The 21-year-old Croatian big man spent the 2021-22 season with KK Split in his home country. Matković was initially drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2020 NBA Draft but was traded to the Pelicans on draft night.
Pelicans Excited About Matković's Return
Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin expressed his excitement about Matković's return: “We're thrilled to welcome Karlo back to New Orleans. He's a talented young player with a bright future, and we believe he can be a valuable contributor to our team.”
Matković averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in 25 appearances for KK Split last season. He also shot 54.2% from the field and 38.5% from three-point range.
Matković's Role in Pelicans' Plans
Matković is expected to compete for a backup center role behind Jonas Valančiūnas. The Pelicans also have Willy Hernangómez on their roster, but he is a free agent this summer and could depart.
Matković has shown potential as a shooter and rebounder, and he could provide the Pelicans with some depth in the frontcourt. He is also a good passer for his size, which could make him a valuable asset in the Pelicans' offense.
Pelicans' 2023-24 Outlook
The Pelicans are coming off a disappointing season in which they finished 36-46 and missed the playoffs. However, they have a young and talented roster led by Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and CJ McCollum.
With the addition of Matković, the Pelicans have added some depth to their frontcourt and should be a more competitive team in 2023-24.
