SMU Cornerback Left Game vs. Pitt in Ambulance After Scary Injury
SMU's season took a scary turn on Saturday when cornerback Arquan Bush was carted off the field in an ambulance after suffering a neck injury in the first quarter of the team's game against Pitt.
Bush was injured while making a tackle on Pitt wide receiver Jordan Addison. He was down on the field for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. SMU head coach Sonny Dykes said after the game that Bush had movement in his extremities and was being evaluated at a local hospital.
The injury cast a pall over what was otherwise a positive day for SMU. The Mustangs beat Pitt 41-38 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Ulysses Bentley rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown.
But Bush's injury was a sobering reminder of the risks that football players face every time they take the field. Neck injuries are particularly serious, and they can have life-altering consequences.
SMU is hoping that Bush's injury is not as serious as it looked. But for now, the Mustangs are just relieved that he is alive and well.
