Barcelona Thrash Espanyol in Catalan Derby
Blaugrana Dominate Local Rivals to Maintain Unbeaten Start
Goals from Lewandowski, Pedri, and Memphis Seal Comfortable Victory
FC Barcelona continued their impressive start to the 2023/24 season with a convincing 3-1 victory over local rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday.
The Blaugrana were in control from the outset and took the lead in the 23rd minute through a stunning strike from Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the top corner.
Barcelona doubled their advantage just before halftime when Pedri finished off a slick passing move with a cool finish from close range. The young midfielder timed his run perfectly to meet a cross from Ousmane Dembele and guide the ball into the net.
Espanyol pulled a goal back in the second half through Sergi Darder, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Memphis Depay restored Barcelona's two-goal lead in the 73rd minute.
The victory extends Barcelona's unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches this season. The Catalan giants have now won five of their last six league games and sit top of the La Liga standings with 19 points from seven matches.
Espanyol, meanwhile, remain in 15th place with just seven points from seven matches. The defeat extends their winless run to five matches in all competitions.
