Vincent Kompany has revealed the secret to Burnley’s success this season is making every game feel like a final.
The Clarets clinched promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking under the Belgian’s leadership, securing the Championship title with four games to spare.
And Kompany believes the key to their success has been to create an environment where every match is treated with the same importance.
“We want every game to be a final for the players so that if a final does come around, it’ll just be another day,” he said.
“That’s the mentality we’ve tried to instil in them and it’s worked so far.
“We’ve had some big games this season, against teams like Sheffield United and Watford, and we’ve always managed to raise our game.
“That’s what we need to do in the Premier League. We need to be able to compete with the best teams and we can only do that if we treat every game like it’s a final.”
Kompany also spoke about the importance of mental health, something he has been open about in the past.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health,” he said.
“We need to create an environment where players feel comfortable talking about their mental health and where they can get the support they need.
“I’m really proud of the work we’ve done in this area at Burnley. We’ve got a great team of people who are dedicated to supporting our players’ mental health.
“I think it’s really important for clubs to take mental health seriously. It’s not just about winning games, it’s about looking after the people who make it all possible.”
Kompany also discussed his plans for the club’s future, saying he wants to build a team that can compete with the best in the Premier League.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but I’m confident that we can build a team that can compete with the best in the Premier League,” he said.
“We’ve got a great group of players and we’re going to add to that in the summer.
“I’m excited about the future of this club. We’ve got a lot of potential and I’m confident that we can achieve great things.”
