Turkey and France vow to boost cooperation after Erdogan-Macron meeting

The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in Libya, and economic cooperation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Paris on Friday to discuss a range of issues, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in Libya, and economic cooperation.

The meeting was the first between the two leaders since Macron's election in May. It comes at a time of heightened tensions between Turkey and the European Union, particularly over Turkey's crackdown on dissent following a failed coup attempt in July 2016.

Despite the tensions, Erdogan and Macron struck a conciliatory tone in their public remarks after the meeting. Erdogan said that he had a “very fruitful” discussion with Macron and that the two leaders had agreed to “boost cooperation” between Turkey and France.

Macron said that he and Erdogan had discussed a range of issues, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in Libya, and economic cooperation. He said that he had “a very frank and open” discussion with Erdogan and that the two leaders had agreed to “work together” on a number of issues.

The meeting between Erdogan and Macron is a sign of the importance that both countries attach to their bilateral relationship. Turkey and France are both major powers in the Mediterranean region and they have a long history of cooperation on a range of issues.

The meeting also comes at a time of heightened tensions between Turkey and the European Union. The EU has criticized Turkey's crackdown on dissent following the failed coup attempt in July 2016 and has threatened to impose sanctions on Turkey if it does not improve its human rights record.
