Kam Jones a Bucket-Getter, Chase Ross Too for Marquette in Opener
Jones Shows Out, Ross Delivers
Kam Jones led the way for Marquette in the Golden Eagles' season-opening win over SIU Edwardsville on Monday night, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Chase Ross also had a big game, scoring 19 points off the bench.
Jones was efficient from the field, shooting 8-of-14. He also hit 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Ross was even more efficient, shooting 7-of-12 from the field. He also hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Team Effort Leads Marquette to Victory
In addition to Jones and Ross, Marquette got solid contributions from several other players. Tyler Kolek had 10 points and 6 assists. Kur Kuath had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Oso Ighodaro had 8 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 47.4% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded SIU Edwardsville 41-28.
Balanced Attack Key for Marquette
Marquette's balanced attack was too much for SIU Edwardsville to handle. The Golden Eagles had four players in double figures, and they got contributions from all over the roster.
This is a good sign for Marquette going forward. If they can continue to get balanced scoring, they will be a tough team to beat.
Next Up for Marquette
Marquette will be back in action on Friday night when they host Eastern Illinois. The Golden Eagles will be looking to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Eastern Illinois is coming off a 75-67 win over Chicago State in their season opener. The Panthers are led by senior guard Josiah Wallace, who averaged 15.6 points per game last season.
Marquette will need to be ready for a tough challenge from Eastern Illinois. The Panthers are a well-coached team with a lot of experience.
