Another Earthquake Hits Buryatia

Tremors Felt, No Damage Reported

Magnitude 5 Event Registered

A magnitude-5 earthquake struck the Russian republic of Buryatia on Monday evening, according to the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

The epicenter of the quake was located in the Muysky district, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the city of Ulan-Ude, the regional capital.

Tremors were felt in Ulan-Ude and other parts of the republic, but no damage or injuries have been reported so far. The earthquake is the second to hit Buryatia in less than a week. On July 16, a magnitude-4.7 earthquake struck the Kyakhtinsky district, also without causing any significant damage.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Buryatia, which is located in a seismically active region. In 2017, a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck the republic, causing widespread damage and injuries.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Baikal Rift Zone, which runs through Buryatia, is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The zone is caused by the collision of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which creates a lot of stress and pressure on the Earth's crust.

The Buryatia government has set up a commission to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake. The commission is currently working to determine if any buildings have been damaged and if any residents have been injured.

Residents of Buryatia have been advised to stay calm and follow the instructions of local authorities. They should also be prepared for aftershocks, which can occur after an earthquake.
