Arsenal football club adds two players to bolster depth
Unai Emery has added two new players to his Arsenal squad ahead of the new season. The Gunners have signed defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund and forward Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen.
Sokratis is a Greek international with over 50 caps for his country. He is a versatile defender who can play at centre-back or right-back. Leno is a German international with over 20 caps for his country. He is a highly-rated goalkeeper known for his shot-stopping abilities and command of the penalty area.
Emery is delighted to have added two players of such quality to his squad.
“I am very happy to have signed Sokratis and Bernd,” he said. “They are both experienced internationals who will add quality and depth to our squad. I am confident that they will be valuable assets to the club in the years to come.”
Sokratis and Leno are both expected to make their debuts for Arsenal in the club’s pre-season friendly against Atlético Madrid on August 12.
### Sokratis Papastathopoulos
Sokratis Papastathopoulos is a Greek professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Premier League club Arsenal. He is a full international for the Greece national team.
Sokratis began his career with AEK Athens in 2005. He moved to Genoa in 2008 and then to Werder Bremen in 2010. In 2013, he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal in 2017. He joined Arsenal in 2018.
Sokratis has made over 50 appearances for the Greece national team. He was part of the team that won the UEFA European Championship in 2004.
### Bernd Leno
Bernd Leno is a German professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Premier League club Arsenal. He is a full international for the Germany national team.
Leno began his career with VfB Stuttgart in 2011. He moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013. In 2018, he joined Arsenal.
Leno has made over 20 appearances for the Germany national team. He was part of the team that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017.
