Doc Rivers Rips Refs: ‘The Official Never Saw the Play Because of Our Player, You Can’t Guess in Playoff Games’
Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers blasted the referees after a controversial no-call in the final seconds of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Miami Heat.
“The official never saw the play because of our player,” Rivers said. “You can’t guess in playoff games.”
The play in question occurred with just over 10 seconds remaining in the game and the 76ers trailing by one point. James Harden drove to the basket and appeared to be fouled by Heat center Bam Adebayo, but no call was made.
The 76ers were forced to foul Adebayo, who made both free throws to give the Heat a three-point lead. The 76ers had a chance to tie the game, but Harden’s three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.
Rivers was visibly upset with the no-call after the game and said he had spoken to the referees about it. He said the referees told him they didn’t see the play because Harden’s teammate, Joel Embiid, was in the way.
“I don’t know how you can’t see the play,” Rivers said. “It’s right there in front of you. You’ve got to make the call. You can’t guess. You’ve got to make the right call.”
The no-call was a big moment in the game, and it could have a major impact on the series. The Heat now lead 2-1, and they have home-court advantage in Game 4.
The 76ers will need to regroup and find a way to win Game 4 if they want to tie the series. They will also need to hope that the referees do a better job of officiating the game.
