«Меня чуть не стошнило», — Ван дер Варт о праздновании Вегорста гола в ворота Венгрии
Van der Vaart on Weghorst's celebration: “I almost threw up”
Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has criticized Wout Weghorst's celebration after scoring the winning goal against Hungary on Tuesday.
Weghorst celebrated by putting his finger in his mouth and making a sucking gesture, which has been interpreted by some as a reference to the fact that Hungary's goalkeeper, Peter Gulacsi, is married to a porn star.
Van der Vaart, who played with Weghorst at Hamburger SV, said on Dutch television that he found the celebration to be “disrespectful” and “unsportsmanlike”.
“I almost threw up when I saw that,” Van der Vaart said. “It's just not done. You don't do that to your opponent, especially not after you've just scored a goal against them.”
Weghorst has since apologized for his celebration, saying that he meant no disrespect.
“I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my celebration,” Weghorst said. “I was just caught up in the moment and I didn't think about what I was doing.”
However, Van der Vaart is not the only one who has criticized Weghorst's celebration. Many fans have also taken to social media to express their disgust.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “Weghorst's celebration was disgusting. It's a shame on the game.”
Another fan wrote: “I'm a lifelong Netherlands fan, but I'm ashamed of Weghorst after that celebration. It was disrespectful and unsportsmanlike.”
Weghorst's celebration has also been condemned by the Hungarian Football Federation, which has called for FIFA to take action.
“The Hungarian Football Federation strongly condemns the unsportsmanlike and disrespectful goal celebration of Wout Weghorst,” the federation said in a statement.
“We call on FIFA to take appropriate disciplinary action against the player.”
