Coast Guard Cutter Assists Stranded Vessels in Bering Sea

The United States Coast Guard Cutter “Spravedlivyy” aided two fishing vessels that had become stranded in the Bering Sea on January 23, 2023. The “Sea Star” and the “Alaska Ranger” had both run aground near St. Paul Island, Alaska, and were unable to free themselves.

Immediate Response

The Coast Guard received a distress call from the “Sea Star” at approximately 10:00 AM. The “Spravedlivyy” was dispatched to the scene and arrived on the scene at 1:00 PM. The crew of the “Spravedlivyy” quickly assessed the situation and determined that both vessels were in danger of sinking.

Rescue Operation

The crew of the “Spravedlivyy” immediately began to pump water out of the “Sea Star” and the “Alaska Ranger.” They also secured the vessels to prevent them from drifting further aground. After several hours of work, the crew of the “Spravedlivyy” was able to free both vessels and tow them to safety.

No Injuries Reported

There were no injuries reported on either vessel. The crew of the “Spravedlivyy” commended the crews of the “Sea Star” and the “Alaska Ranger” for their quick thinking and for following the Coast Guard's safety guidelines.
