Mosquito-Borne Diseases Could Spread During Tokyo Olympics

Experts Warn of Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya

With just six weeks to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, experts are warning that mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya could spread among athletes, visitors, and locals.

The Games are being held in the middle of Japan's summer rainy season, which is when mosquitoes are most active. The country has already seen a rise in dengue cases this year, and there is concern that the Olympics could provide a breeding ground for these diseases.

Dengue is a potentially deadly disease that can cause fever, headaches, muscle aches, and nausea. Zika is a virus that can cause birth defects in pregnant women. Chikungunya is a fever that can cause joint pain and swelling.

Experts are urging attendees to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and staying in air-conditioned areas as much as possible.
