1968 Plymouth Barracuda B029 “Mule” Spotted in the Wild, Super Stock HEMI Sounds Vicious

Garage Keep Dream Ride Unearthed

The 1968 Plymouth Barracuda B029 has resurfaced, a “mule” originally used to test the 426 Hemi Super Stock engine. What made this car special, beyond its incredible sound, was its lightweight, weighing in at a scant 3,110 pounds.

The 426 Hemi had a legendary reputation and was so powerful that NASCAR banned it from competition. Racing legend Richard Petty once said of the Hemi, “It's like a hand grenade going off under the hood.”

Testing a Legend

The Barracuda B029 was built for testing the Hemi in the wild. It was adorned with racing-specific equipment, including a four-speed transmission, a Dana 60 rear end, and a roll cage. Thanks to these modifications, it was able to achieve speeds of over 150 mph on the test track.

Although the exterior of the B029 is fairly understated, its interior is dominated by a large tachometer and gauges, adding to its racing pedigree.

Restored to Glory

After testing, the B029 was eventually sold and made its way into the hands of collector Jerry Schoenith in the 1980s. Schoenith painstakingly restored the car to its original glory, making it a true automotive treasure.

Today, the B029 is a rare and valuable piece of automotive history, and its recent appearance is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic muscle cars.
