Yankees Injury Notes: Anthony Rizzo 'likely' to be activated Sunday; updates on Clarke Schmidt, Ian Hamilton

Anthony Rizzo set to return

New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is “likely” to be activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday when the team opens a three-game series at home against the Baltimore Orioles, manager Aaron Boone said Friday.

Rizzo has been sidelined since July 31 with lower back tightness. He has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since Monday, going 3-for-12 with a home run and two walks.

The Yankees have missed Rizzo's bat in the middle of their lineup. He is batting .225 with 30 home runs and 75 RBIs in 99 games this season.

Clarke Schmidt to start rehab assignment

Right-hander Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to start a rehab assignment with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, Boone said.

Schmidt has been out since July 19 with a right shoulder strain. He has made 15 starts for the Yankees this season, going 5-3 with a 3.87 ERA.

The Yankees are hopeful that Schmidt can return to the rotation in September.

Ian Hamilton to undergo Tommy John surgery

Left-hander Ian Hamilton will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, Boone said.

Hamilton has been out since July 13 with a left elbow flexor strain. He has made 25 relief appearances for the Yankees this season, going 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA.

The recovery time for Tommy John surgery is typically 12-15 months. This means Hamilton is likely to miss the entire 2023 season.
