Whitecaps FC and Timbers Draw 1-1, Timbers Advance in Canadian Championship

Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Portland Timbers played to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal on Wednesday night at BC Place Stadium.

The result means that the Timbers advance to the final on a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.

The Whitecaps took the lead in the 10th minute when Ryan Gauld curled a free kick into the top corner of the net.

The Timbers equalized in the 25th minute when Dairon Asprilla poked home a rebound from close range.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the second half, but neither could find a winning goal.

The Timbers will now face Toronto FC in the final of the Canadian Championship on June 21.

Whitecaps FC Head Coach Vanni Sartini was disappointed with the result, but praised his team's effort.

“I thought we played a very good game,” Sartini said. “We created a lot of chances, but we couldn't find the second goal. We're disappointed, but we're proud of the effort the players put in.”

Timbers Head Coach Giovanni Savarese was pleased with his team's performance, especially in the second half.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game,” Savarese said. “Vancouver is a good team, and they made it difficult for us. But we showed great character in the second half, and we deserved to win.”
