Nice shocked Monaco on Sunday, inflicting the latter's first defeat of the season in a thrilling 2-1 encounter at the Allianz Riviera.
Sofiane Diop put Monaco ahead with a superb strike in the 28th minute, but Nice rallied back through goals from Andy Delort and Kasper Dolberg to claim all three points.
The victory lifted Nice to fifth place in the Ligue 1 standings, while Monaco dropped to third.
What Happened?
Nice started the match brightly and created several chances in the opening stages, but Monaco took the lead against the run of play when Diop fired a stunning long-range effort into the top corner.
The home side refused to be disheartened, however, and they equalized just before halftime when Delort converted a penalty after being fouled by Guillermo Maripan.
Nice continued to press for a winner in the second half and eventually got their reward when Dolberg headed home a cross from Alexis Claude-Maurice in the 73rd minute.
What's Next?
Nice will look to build on their victory when they travel to Strasbourg next weekend, while Monaco will be aiming to bounce back when they host Lille.
Reaction
“We're very happy with the win,” said Nice coach Christophe Galtier. “We knew it would be a tough match, but we showed great character to come back from behind and win.”
“We're disappointed with the result,” said Monaco coach Niko Kovac. “We played well in the first half, but we made some mistakes in the second half and Nice punished us.”
The result was a major setback for Monaco, who had won their first four matches of the season and were looking to maintain their 100% record.
However, Nice showed great spirit and determination to come from behind and claim a famous victory.
