When heavy rain, strong storms will move into central Iowa on Wednesday
Where and when they're expected
Iowans should prepare for severe storms starting Wednesday afternoon, with the worst of the weather expected to hit central Iowa. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for 35 counties in central Iowa, including Polk, Dallas, Warren, Jasper, and Story counties. The storms are expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and possibly tornadoes. The NWS has also issued a flood watch for much of central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro area.
How to prepare
There are several things Iowans can do to prepare for the storms. Here are a few tips:
- Have a plan in place in case of a tornado or flood warning.
- Make sure your emergency kit is up to date.
- Charge your electronic devices.
- Bring in outdoor furniture and other loose items.
- Secure your home and vehicles.
What to do if you're caught in a storm
If you're caught in a storm, there are several things you should do to stay safe. Here are a few tips:
- Seek shelter in a sturdy building.
- Stay away from windows.
- If you're in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stay inside.
- If you're outside, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
