She began her acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in small roles in films such as “The Love God?” and “Clambake.” She gained wider recognition in the 1970s for her roles in films such as “Oh, God!” and “Young Frankenstein.” In 1982, she starred in “Tootsie,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Garr continued to work steadily in film and television throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She appeared in films such as “Mr. Mom,” “The Black Cauldron,” and “Ghostbusters II.” She also had a recurring role on the TV show “Friends,” playing Phoebe Buffay's mother.
