Iowa State women’s hoops set for pair of exhibitions, one scrimmage before regular season

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State women’s basketball will rely heavily on exhibition games and a scrimmage to get ready for the regular season, which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 11 against Chicago State.

This is because the Cyclones have eight players who are still recovering from injuries and a new coaching staff led by head coach Charlotte Ryan. Ryan comes to Iowa State after spending the last seven seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa.

Pitch counts and rotations aplenty

With so many players still recovering from injuries, Ryan said the Cyclones will use the exhibition games and scrimmage to get as many players as possible some playing time.

“We’re going to try to get everybody as many minutes as we can,” Ryan said. “We’re going to try to keep the rotations pretty even so that everybody can get a feel for what it’s like to play in our system.”

Ryan said the Cyclones will also use the exhibition games and scrimmage to experiment with different lineups and rotations.

“We’re still trying to figure out what our best lineups are and how we want to play,” Ryan said. “We’re going to use these exhibition games and scrimmage to try different things and see what works best.”

Exhibition schedule

The Cyclones will play two exhibition games before the regular season begins. The first exhibition game will be on Nov. 1 against Division II opponent Southwest Minnesota State. The second exhibition game will be on Nov. 5 against Division I opponent Drake.

Scrimmage schedule

The Cyclones will also scrimmage against Buena Vista University on Oct. 29.

Regular season schedule

The Cyclones will open the regular season on Nov. 11 against Chicago State. The Cyclones will play their first home game of the season on Nov. 13 against Northern Iowa.
