Pitt HC Capel Gives Injury Update on Forward Amsal Delalić
Delalić Suffers High-Ankle Sprain in Preseason Practice
Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Jeff Capel provided an injury update on forward Amsal Delalić on Wednesday, announcing that the sophomore has suffered a high-ankle sprain.
The injury occurred during a preseason practice session, and Delalić is expected to miss several weeks while he recovers.
Capel Expresses Optimism About Delalić's Return
Despite the setback, Capel expressed optimism about Delalić's ability to return to the court soon.
“Amsal is a tough kid, and he's working hard to get back on the court as soon as possible,” Capel said. “We're going to take it day-by-day and see how he progresses, but we're hopeful that he'll be back in the lineup soon.”
Delalić's Absence a Blow to Panthers' Frontcourt
Delalić's injury is a blow to the Panthers' frontcourt, as he was expected to play a significant role in the team's rotation this season.
The 6'10″ forward averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season, and he was expected to be a key contributor off the bench for the Panthers this year.
Panthers Will Seek to Fill Delalić's Void
With Delalić out of the lineup, the Panthers will need to find other players to fill his void in the frontcourt.
Sophomore forward John Hugley IV and junior forward Abdoul Karim Coulibaly are expected to see increased minutes, and the Panthers may also look to redshirt freshman center Nate Santos for help in the paint.
Panthers Begin Season Next Week
The Panthers begin the 2022-23 season on Monday, November 7, when they host the Robert Morris Colonials at the Petersen Events Center.
It remains to be seen how Delalić's injury will impact the Panthers' performance early in the season, but Capel is confident that his team can overcome this setback and have a successful campaign.
