Commanders Tight End John Bates Questionable for Week 3

MRI Confirms Grade 1 Calf Strain

Bates Suffered Injury in Preseason Finale

Washington Commanders tight end John Bates is questionable to play in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Bates suffered a grade 1 calf strain in the preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens.

Bates has been a key part of the Commanders' offense this season, catching two passes for 18 yards in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is also a valuable blocker, which is important in the Commanders' run-heavy offense.

If Bates is unable to play, the Commanders will likely turn to Armani Rogers and Cole Turner at tight end. Rogers has three catches for 29 yards this season, while Turner has one catch for 11 yards.

The Commanders are hoping that Bates will be able to play in Week 3, but they will not rush him back if he is not 100% healthy. The team is off in Week 4, so Bates will have an extra week to recover if he is unable to play against the Eagles.
